Deputy hit-and-run suspect arrested in Fort Lauderdale
A BSO deputy is out of the hospital, NSU adds museum days, and Fort Lauderdale's weekend calendar fills up.
Deputy hit-and-run suspect arrested in Fort Lauderdale
Broward Sheriff's Office says Sean Alexis, 40, was arrested Friday after a hit-and-run crash that injured a deputy in Fort Lauderdale. The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. near West Broward Boulevard and Northwest 11th Avenue. BSO said the deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released. Alexis was found in Plantation and taken into custody. He faces charges that include hit-and-run/failure to stop and remain at a crash involving injury, hit-and-run/leaving the scene involving property damage, and driving while license suspended. The case keeps attention on a busy west-side corridor where even a single crash can snarl an evening commute and pull first responders into a wider search (NBC 6 South Florida).
Police investigate Sunday drowning downtown
Fort Lauderdale police are investigating after a man drowned Sunday morning in the 200 block of Southwest Second Avenue. Police said they received a call around 5:07 a.m. about a possible drowning, then spoke with witnesses who reported seeing a man enter the water. Police, fire rescue and the Broward Sheriff's Office aviation unit searched the area. The man was found and taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died. His identity had not been released (NBC 6 South Florida).
Sweet Melody is now open in Flagler Village
Sweet Melody Ice Cream is now open at The Hive in Flagler Village, giving the neighborhood a new dessert stop at 908 N. Flagler Drive. The shop's posted hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight Friday, 2 p.m. to midnight Saturday, and 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday. The Fort Lauderdale location opened with a vinyl-inspired grand-opening push and a charity tie-in for Women In Distress, then settled into a seven-day schedule that works for after-dinner runs and late Friday or Saturday plans (What Now Miami).
NSU Art Museum adds Clay Play and Neighbor Day
NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale has two easy calendar holds this month. Creativity Exploration: Clay Play runs Saturday, June 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m., giving adults a short hands-on studio option in the middle of the day. The museum's free Fort Lauderdale Neighbor Day follows Sunday, June 28, from noon to 5 p.m. That pairing gives locals one paid workshop-style visit and one free weekend window on the same June calendar (NSU Art Museum).
First Thursday brings Mini Muse in July
NSU Art Museum's Free First Thursday with All-Day Mini Muse is listed for Thursday, July 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The all-day window makes it easier to use than a narrow workshop slot: stop in during the afternoon, or hold it for an early evening museum visit after work. It also gives families another museum date after June's Neighbor Day (NSU Art Museum).
Riverwalk stacks concerts and Juneteenth events
Riverwalk's concert calendar gets busy fast. Electric Feels is listed for Friday, June 12, at 9 p.m.; KISS America follows Saturday, June 13, at 7 p.m.; and the June 20 slate includes Juneteenth Celebration from 5 to 8 p.m., The Juneteenth Experience MainStage Performance from 7 to 9 p.m., Hardwired's Metallica tribute at 7 p.m., Josh Groban at 8 p.m. and Vince Gill at 8 p.m. That is a packed downtown night, so pick the event first and then build the parking and dinner plan around it (Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale event calendar).
Two late-June art openings land on Riverwalk calendar
Riverwalk's cultural calendar has two late-June arts entries to keep in view. I AM MY ANCESTORS runs Tuesday, June 23, through Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Art of Language Opening Reception follows Friday, June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. The timing creates a culture lane after the busier mid-June concert stretch, with one longer-running exhibition and one evening reception (Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale event calendar).
Commission meetings continue on the December calendar
Fort Lauderdale's Legistar calendar already shows City Commission meetings stretching into late 2026, including a regular meeting listed for Dec. 15 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts' Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom. Agendas for those dates have not been posted yet on the city's online calendar, so there is no policy item to flag. Keep the calendar handy as agenda links are added closer to each meeting (Fort Lauderdale Legistar).
